CHICAGO DIRECTOR AND UIUC ALUMNI TYRONE PHILLIPS

A behind-the-scenes feature highlights Tyrone Phillips, a 2012 University of Illinois grad, as he returns to his alma mater to direct “The Royale,” a play based on the story of Jack Johnson, the first Black man to become heavyweight boxing champion in 1910.

Phillips is currently the artistic director of Chicago’s Definition Theatre Company, a troupe originated by several Illinois alumni who create stories with, for and inspired by people of color. The director brings with him extensive knowledge of the Chicago theater scene, which he shares with students wishing to one day grace the stages of the “Windy City.”

Throughout this project, I collaborated with a team at the Big Ten Network to film and edit this video. Working more closely with professional lighting, video, and audio equipment.
